By studying online communication, students acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge. But it is only in professional life that this connection becomes apparent. The new interns at amce studios share their first impressions and report on how their studies complement their new experiences.

We are Leonie Seidel and Bianca Rauth, students studying online communication at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and since the beginning of September, we have been completing a six-month internship at the digital agency amce studios in Darmstadt. After more than two years of study, during which we have built up theoretical knowledge and worked on many fictitious projects, we would like to finally gain practical experience in a real company.

Why we chose Amce Studios.

amce Studios, a digital agency from Darmstadt, was founded by Amelie Diehl and Cedric Coors, with the mission to create unique brands through authentic marketing, memorable visuals & strong messages.

We were particularly impressed that Amelie Diehl herself studied online communication at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences a few years ago and also teaches at the university as a lecturer.

While studying online communication at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, we learn how to strategically design digital communication and implement it perfectly tailored to the respective target groups.

The degree program combines theoretical principles with practical projects and covers important areas such as online marketing, PR, media law, web analysis and online monitoring. In doing so, we acquire in-depth knowledge in the development and implementation of digital campaigns and the data-driven analysis of communication measures. We can adapt these perfectly to customers, as we have worked on many fictitious and sometimes real assignments over the course of our studies. Thanks to intensive cooperation in numerous group projects, we are able to quickly get involved in various projects and react flexibly to new requirements — which makes us valuable team members.

Our expectations for the internship.

Our expectations for the internship at amce studios are high. Even during our studies, a combination of practice and theory is guaranteed. Through so-called learning agencies, students are commissioned by external customers and a suitable result is worked out together with 1-2 lecturers.

These insights into working with real customers really motivated us because for the first time it feels like the work you put into your tasks really makes sense and is important. After completing two learning agencies, the desire was awakened to also be able to work on customer projects during our internship.

We would also like to get to know everyday life and processes in an agency. We are particularly interested in how coordination between departments works and how to proceed when a new, large, unstructured customer project is pending.

The first weeks of an internship.

At the start of the internship, we received a comprehensive overview of the agency's ongoing projects and internal processes. Step by step, we were involved in the work and gained a first impression of the cooperation between agency and customers. It quickly became apparent that although there are many parallels with theoretical knowledge from studying online communication, everyday work in an agency is much more dynamic and practice-oriented.

While general concepts and methods are often taught during studies, every project in the agency requires a tailored approach and specific expertise. The flexibility and adaptability required here go far beyond what we have learned in the course of study projects. Nevertheless, a clear structure, similar to that of studying, is retained.

Another significant difference is the daily distribution of tasks, which is associated with short deadlines and clear responsibility. This is very different from semester projects during studies, where a large task is worked on over several months. Through daily tasks, we feel more responsible, which increases our motivation and at the same time answers many questions that were only dealt with theoretically during our studies.

The practical work in the agency shows how theoretical knowledge is applied in real projects and illustrates how important it is to think flexibly and in a practice-oriented way — an aspect that can often only be learned to some extent during studies.

Our initial findings.

After the first few weeks of our internship, we are certain that we have made the right choice with amce studios! The projects and tasks that we are working on here fit perfectly with what we have in mind for our professional future. The experience we are able to gain here will be of great importance for our future career and will further complement what we learn during our studies.

Our goals for the future.

For the coming months, we have decided to get as much out of the internship as possible. We want to be involved in all project areas and gain a lot of experience — through customer projects and also through the various departments here at amce studios. We are also looking forward to spending time with the entire team working together on new projects and learning under the best conditions.
